CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Reimi Saionji
CANON: Star Ocean: The Last Hope
CANON REFERENCE: Star Ocean: The Last Hope @ Star Ocean Wikia, Reimi Saionji @ Star Ocean Wikia
AGE: 20
GENDER: Female
YEAR IN SCHOOL: Fourth year college undergrad.

APPEARANCE:
Image. Reimi is physically a human, so no changes here other than more casual clothing.

PERSONALITY:
Reimi displays several traits of what may be considered "Mary Sue" of a leading female heroine in an adventure story. One, she's the main protagonist's childhood friend. Two, she's the canon love interest. Three, she holds many secrets immediately pertaining to the protagonist's journey. On the surface, there's very little about her that isn't a screaming cliche. Putting that aside for now, Reimi is an outgoing and kind girl who's willing to put a group together and have it work as well as it could. She is also fairly feminine and domestic, taking pride in her physical appearance and caring for it, as well as being adept at cooking. She's always there to support others and works well with children in a matronly manner. She's basically like the big sister of the group in her canon.

However, Reimi also has some unresolved issues, especially concerning her heritage. Reimi despises being different, and keeps it a secret even though something like a disease or radiation won't be enough to kill her. She tends to try to distract herself by focusing on other things, such as archery or caring for somebody else aside from herself. Even at the Institute where practically everybody's a mutant, Reimi finds little solace at first because she was artificially created, whole most others were created naturally. After making a few friends, Reimi comes off as much better-adjusted, though she still keeps her background something of a secret. Overall while she has some mild-angst going on in the back of her mind, she doesn't display it openly and knows how to have fun and a good time as well.

Given that she was raised in an elite background, Reimi has nearly impeccable manners and comes off as a refined individual, fitting the image of the "beautiful and mysterious Asian transfer student" fairly well. She doesn't come off as conceited though and never views academics as a competition. Her strongest subject and major involves botany. She's more just enjoying school life as it is.

One of Reimi's major hobbies include archery - using archery to focus and escape the world was her method of coping earlier on in her life, and she has dedicated enough of her time and energy to be considered a master practitioner of both Eastern and Western forms of archery, and has incredible focus. It may not be a mutant superpower, but she is incredibly accurate and not to be trifled with. She also has no issue using humans who attack her as her targets.

She is no stranger to confrontation - Reimi may be polite, but she isn't a pushover in any sense of the word. She's able to word her arguments fairly quickly and manages to get her points across, and she's willing to agree to disagree on several manners. She's by no means passive-aggressive and has no issues speaking her mind when something's bothering her. Again, the only thing she avoids like the plague is talking about her own background.

Reimi is a strong individual who is very supportive of her friends and tries to bring everybody together, and is very likeable by most people; she makes friends easily. She's very much a supporter rather than a "spotlight" sort of personality.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
Reimi is atypical for an RPG heroine since she's mainly a melee unit in battle; she learns nothing but archery special arts and has no symbols at all to cast, as opposed to most heroines who tend to specialize in healing. She's also adept at cooking.

Other than that, though, Reimi is very much a normal girl. She's intelligent and kind and not ditzy at all; she's also knowledgeable about plants, resulting in better item drops when fighting plant-type monsters as well as being able to harvest plants for useable items. She'll still slap you silly if you peep on her when she showers, though.

Reimi's mutant ability is her uncanny healing ability. The changes to her genetic make-up from what were believed to be the DNA of the ancient Muah make her incredibly resilient to all forms of illness, and she heals at a fairly advanced rate - what would take a week for a normal human body to heal in regards to lacerations and fractures, Reimi will be able to return to doing normal activity within 24 hours (in the case of gaping lacerations or fractures, they would have to be set, obviously, and won't heal in a weird way where she's permanently disabled). In canon, the highest form of her resistance is that she's immune to nuclear radiation. She obviously cannot survive out in a space vacuum.

Basically, she has natural resistance to diseases. Her body is incredibly resilient, and when confronted with stone sickness the disease progressed incredibly quickly as her body was adjusting to it, and she was cured immediately once they found the medicine against stone sickness as her body worked with the medicine to further accelerate the effect. It is implied that she would have survived the stone sickness eventually after her body had time to get used to it and learn how to combat it, rather than remaining stone forever. She is by no means immortal, but heals very quickly and easelessly.

AU HISTORY:
The Saionji family is a fairly well known aristocratic family in Japan, which is why you see the family name in many high-class characters in anime and manga. Several decades ago, as a way to have a fail-safe in regards to a certain nation's "perfect race" that Japan had allied with during the second world war, the Saionji family invested in augmenting the human genome. Around the same time, the Japan government had found ruins underneath the Pacific Ocean, of what they believed to be the ruins of the ancient continent and civilization of the Muah, Mu. Obviously, this may or may not be true (depending on the world-building the mods want to go with), but for the purposes of this history the Saionji family believes it to be.

The Saionji family spearheaded an experiment to map the Muah genome, which revealed that it had genetic parts that were not present in modern human DNA. They attempted to splice these with dormant human portions of the human genome and see what had happened. It may or may not have had anything to do with the mutant-gene - I'm leaving that up to the mods. In any case, after several test subjects have died, Dr. Saionji thought he found a way to perfect the process - rather than altering a being already born, he would alter the gametes prior to conception. He did this process with his own family's DNA, and thus Reimi was born. No other survivors of the project were recorded.

However, due to government pressure, the Saionji family had to cease their activities, as Reimi did not display any abilities whatsoever. It wasn't until she was a teenager that she found out about her abilities - an Earthquake had hit Japan, and one of the nuclear power reactors was majorly damaged as a result. Though the area was quarantined, Reimi and her friends were at the brunt of the leakage and were all hospitalized once they were found. Predictably, everyone died - but Reimi. It was this time when Reimi's father revealed to her what they had done, and Reimi was branded a monster by the surviving parents of the children she had been hospitalized with.

In order to keep her abilities a secret, Reimi was home-schooled until she was eighteen and was sent off to America, where she attempted to start a new life. It is here where she meets others with odd abilities on the streets, and convinces her father to allow her to attend the Xavier Institute, where she's been ever since.

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE:
College life in America was one of the things Reimi always wanted, but never expected to turn out like this. For one, the living accommodations took some getting used to - Reimi wasn't used to sharing living quarters with others in such close proximity since she didn't want anybody finding out how her odd abilities, though that wasn't an issue here. Making her bed, Reimi went over a mental checklist to make certain she had everything she needed before walking out into the halls, ready to start her day.

The day's assignments weren't very difficult, and even if they were Reimi had prepared them far in advance. She always had to prepare for things far in advance. She came to America for a better life than she had in Japan, but all she did was change location - she began to realize that she was still the same person. Even among other mutants, Reimi still considered herself different - a freak, the same monster that her old friends' parents called her.

Her pace slowed. She hadn't changed at all - was there a reason for her to change? All she did was run away her entire life. It was only a matter of time before she may even run away from here, too, at the slightest hint of hardship.

Shaking her head, she knew that the people here were good people. They weren't judgmental at all! But while she knew that in her head, her heart couldn't possibly comprehend it. Looking up, all of the students passing by her in the hall? They were ignoring her presence. Here, she was normal. Here, she was just another face in the crowd.

Reminding herself of that, she plastered a smile onto her face and once again began to walk down the hall in confidence, ready to take on the day.
